The Maheshwari Silk story begins with the silkworm. In 1885, Sir Jamshedji Tata introduced the silkworm to India and made it possible for Indians to produce their own silk thread while keeping some of their traditional weaving methods intact. This was a wonderful breakthrough in Indian history because before that time, all of India's silk had been imported from China.

This delicate fabric can be hand-woven or machine-made; either way, it is valued for its high quality.
