History Of Patola Sarees

It all started in the 12 century, the Salvis coming from the neighbouring states of Gujarat moved to Patan. They weaved the most amusing sarees from silk which were dyed in colourful fabric and stood out because of their exclusive patterns. These beautiful sarees were once worn by royal families and were a symbol of status in society. The price of patola sari was very expensive due to its rich heritage and those who can afford it during the old times.

The legacy of the art still goes on today, few families in Patan still perform this beautiful art. It takes around 6 months to 1 year to make one saree because of the long dying process. These sarees are also known as double ikat woven sarees and the family charges it as very costly. These sarees are of high value in Indonesia and later became part of Indonesian culture. The Salvi community is known for its famous art.

Abstract Motifs and Unique Patterns

One can find animal motifs on the saree like elephants, peacocks and parrots. These sarees are generally characterized by certain bright colours like red, orange, yellow, indigo blue and white. These patola silk sarees are one of a kind and are extremely popular because of their exquisite designs. The making of the patola silk sarees is a tedious job that requires many hands and sadly it is that which is in short supply.

Styling Patola Sarees

These beautiful sarees would look great with traditional silver jewellery. One can also go for gold jewellery. These days many are going for stone jewellery or even pearl jewellery.

One can style these sarees with blouses that compliment the saree. The beautiful saree would look great with full-sleeved blouses. One can also style the saree with a belt or traditional potli purses to get that grand appeal.

These days many like going for printed patola saris. The colorful designs printed on the vivid colored silk sarees make them stand out. Today, celebrities and famous personalities proudly flaunt the printed patola sarees as they are soft and comfortable to wear.

Three Types Of Patola Sarees

Patan Patola Saree: This is the most famous type and is majorly worn all across India. The Patan patola saree is resist-dyed horizontally. Unlike other types, it’s the most famous type of saree which is adorned by many.

Banarasi Patola Saree: The fusion of banarasi saree and patola sari is one of a kind. The patola pattern along with the broad border and rich work on the pallu make banarasi patola saree one of the best creations.

Rajkot Patola Saree: It’s the weaving process that differs. This patola saree is resist-dyed vertically.

How to maintain your Patola Sarees:

1. It is recommended that you should dry clean your patola silk sarees.

2. If you are washing your beautiful patola silk sarees at home, make sure to dip them in cold water for a few mins before hanging out to dry out.

3. Do not use detergent or hand soap in the first wash.

4. Keeping them in a dark corner can help avoid the discoloration of your saree. Do not hang the sarees or hangers or keep them exposed to bad environments.

5. Iron the saree with care on a low setting or get it done with steam ironed.

6. These expensive sarees should be dry cleaned professionally and it is a much better idea than trying to clean them at home.
